John Clarke

Tilly and Snipe by John Clarke

Originating from Warrington John spent 21 years as a Head Gamekeeper on a prestigious Lancashire estate, painting in his spare time.

In May 2006 he was commissioned to paint for Her Majesty the Queen, this accolade led to him to pursue a career in art full time.

Working with gundogs, seeing animals and birds in their natural habitat has helped him to understand and capture the essence of each subject that he paints. His work is so detailed that each individual hair and whisker are painstakingly painted, producing incredibly lifelike paintings.

In each portrait that he does John insists on meeting the animal to find out what the owner sees and also to pick up on its character and temperament so that they can be portrayed in the painting.

Sandro by John ClarkeIn each portrait there is a reflection of the owner painted in the eyes of each animal, or in the case of his still life there will be somebody shooting hidden within the picture.
