Thomas John Brereton was born in Stockport, Cheshire in 1938. He received formal art instruction at the John Henshall studio in Stockport during 1958.

Later he moved from Stockport to Marple and studied under John Mifflin A.R.C.A.

He founded the Society of Marple Artists and was its chairman for 3 years.

Married with two adult sons, he taught art full time to disabled people until his retirement in 1997. He now paints full time.

He has been a long-standing and active member of the David Shepherd Charitable Foundation and is also a member of the Wildlife Art Society and the Society for Wildlife Art of the Nation.

He has exhibited his artwork widely, including the Mall Gallery, London the Northern Wildlife, Wales, the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art, Liverpool and particularly in Manchester, Stockport, Marple and at the Martin Mere Wildfowl Trust.

Paintings are also held in private collections in the U.S.A and Canada. Commissions include artwork for the Cheshire Life and the Dalesman magazine, the Northumberland Wildlife Trust and restoration of paintings for Stockport Art Gallery. He was also the subject of a radio broadcast about his work.
